Piano Health & Safety in Public Buildings

Posted

Do you have a piano in your school, college or public building?

In these modern times health & safety is one of the most important factors in any business or public place.  Gone are the days that you could quickly jump up a ladder to change a lightbulb without having to complete a 4 page risk assessment before!  We all know that Health & Safety really just comes down to common sense.  It is very shocking to see though that when it comes to pianos people don't follow the simplest rules and procedures or even have the correct equipment fitted.

In the last 6 months we have been contacted by 2 separate schools that have had issues regarding their pianos and this was all a result of them not having the correct safety equipment fitted to their pianos.

Upright piano safety brackets from Sheargold Music

Case 1

We had a school ring us up because their caretaker went to move their upright piano in the hall and because it wasn't fitted with safety castors and he pushed the piano from the top, the force of him trying to move the piano actually caused it to fall over onto its back.  Luckily nobody was hurt and the piano had very minimal damage (good old Kawai's!).  We were called in and fitted safety castors to the piano.  These simple, but very effective brackets allow the piano to be wheeled very easily (a bit like a shopping trolley) and because of the way they are fitted to an upright piano it means that the piano simply cannot fall over as the base is extended.

Safety castors can be purchased online from our website at just £195.  We also offer a fitting service if required.  For more information on safety castor fitting for upright pianos please call us on 01932 866577.

Grand piano A-Frames from Sheargold MusicCase 2

Another school rang us as they were trying to move their George Steck player grand piano and due to the way it was being moved the leg actually came off and the piano came crashing down.  Again, luckily nobody was injured, although due to the way the piano fell it had to be written off.  The school have now fitted an A Frame to their new grand piano, which makes moving it a lot safer.  Grand piano a-frames actually fit on each leg and spread the weight across the piano so when you push it to move it the weight is not all on the side that is being pushed - it is evenly distributed across all 3 legs.

Grand piano A-Frames can also be purchased online from our website at just £499 for an 'easy-fit'.  These are very easy to assemble and fit provided you have a jack to lift the piano leg and slot into the frame.  We also offer a fitting service for grand piano a frames.  For more information call us on 01932 866577.
